Another murder; 18th this year

A 28-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday night in the parking lot of a Walmart on Carlisle between Menaul and Candelaria.

It was the 18th murder in the city so far this year. Last year there were 75 homicides in the city, the highest in the city's recent history. And last year's total represented a 150 percent increase from the 30 homicides the city had in 2014.

Here's the news release that Albuquerque police issued on the incident:

Last night, 3/27/18 at approximately 11:58 PM, officers in our Northeast Area Command were dispatched to the Walmart at 2701 Carlisle NE in response to a possible shooting. Comments on the call indicated that a subject had been shot and then wrecked their car into a wall in the parking lot. When officers arrived on scene they observed a male subject in a vehicle that had been wrecked into the retaining wall on the far North side of the Walmart parking lot. The 26 year old male subject was suffering from at least one gunshot wound and died from his injuries on scene. A Violent Crimes Call Out was initiated and this incident will be investigated by our Homicide Unit.

At this time I don’t have any suspect information and victim information will not be released until next of kin has been notified. Detectives are still actively investigating this case and trying to locate and interview witnesses.
