ABQ Journal three months late on population story

    March 29, 2018

    Dennis Domrzalski

The state's largest newspaper, the Albuquerque Journal, is three months late on a story.

This morning, March 29, the Journal had a front-page story about New Mexico's continued brain drain and how more people are leaving the state than are coming here. The Journal acted like this is new information.

It isn't. The U.S. Census Bureau released its latest state population estimates in late December of last year. So the Journal is three months late on the story.

If you read ABQReport, you would have gotten those stats the day the Census Bureau released them. I've posted the story below.

And the Journal, ever the apologist for the status quo, shouted that New Mexico's population for the year that ended July 1, 2017, was "Stable." No, it's not stable, it's stagnant.

And, the Journal missed the latest population stats for metro areas, which the Census Bureau released last week. Again, I reported those stats last week. That story is also posted below.

At least one blogger has acted like the Journal's story is fresh news. It isn't. Maybe the blogger should do his own research instead of relying on the Journal to be three months late on its stories.

I've been a reporter, writer and editor for 37 years. I'm dedicated to honest, fair and hard-hitting reporting. I'm not conservative or liberal, but am just a reporter who tries to get to the truth at any given point in time. I don't believe in pulling punches or being a lap dog because that serves no one. A free and aggressive press is essential to human liberty. That's why the Founding Fathers put a free press in the Constitution. So on this site you'll get a variety of news, fearless opinion, analysis, humor, satire and commentary. It's kind of like a free-for-all. My motto is "Without fear and without favor."  But good journalism takes time and money, so I hope you will contribute what you can to these efforts by clicking on the "Donate" button above.
