Scary weekend coming up at the KiMo Theatre

Three Boris Karloff films will screen

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The KiMo Theatre's 90th Anniversary Season of Celebration continues with a tribute to British actor Boris Karloff just ahead of Halloween with screenings of Frankenstein, The Mummy and The Bride of Frankenstein.

Karloff was primarily known for his typecast roles in horror films. He portrayed Frankenstein's monster in Frankenstein (1931), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939), which resulted in his immense popularity. He also appeared as Imhotep in The Mummy (1932).

Frankenstein is an American horror monster film from Universal Pictures directed by James Whale and adapted from the play by Peggy Webling (which in turn is based on the novel of the same name by Mary Shelley). It's about a scientist and his assistant who dig up corpses to build a man animated by electricity, but the assistant accidentally gives the creature an abnormal, murderer's brain. Frankenstein will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27.

The Mummy is an American horror film directed by Karl Freund. The screenplay by

John L. Balderston was from a story by Nina Wilcox Putnam and Richard Schayer. Released by Universal Studios, the film is about an ancient Egyptian mummy named Imhotep who is discovered by a team of archeologists and inadvertently brought back to life through a magic scroll. Disguised as a modern Egyptian, the mummy searches for his lost love, whom he believes has been reincarnated into a modern girl. The Mummy will screen at 2 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Bride of Frankenstein is an American science-fiction horror film and the first sequel to Frankenstein. It is considered one of the few sequels to a great film that is even better than the original film on which it is based. As with the first film, The Bride of Frankenstein was directed by James Whale. The sequel features Elsa Lanchester in the dual role of Mary Shelley and the Monster's mate at the end of the film. The Bride of Frankenstein will screen at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29.

All screenings are free.

Independent Journalism

I've been a reporter, writer and editor for 37 years. I'm dedicated to honest, fair and hard-hitting reporting. I'm not conservative or liberal, but am just a reporter who tries to get to the truth at any given point in time. I don't believe in pulling punches or being a lap dog because that serves no one. A free and aggressive press is essential to human liberty. That's why the Founding Fathers put a free press in the Constitution. So on this site you'll get a variety of news, fearless opinion, analysis, humor, satire and commentary. It's kind of like a free-for-all. My motto is "Without fear and without favor."  But good journalism takes time and money, so I hope you will contribute what you can to these efforts by clicking on the "Donate" button above. I could use your help. Thanks, Dennis Domrzalski.
